| How can
I volunteer for Beyond the Gate?
Beyond the Gate is a registered charity which operates in the
southwest. As a charity we rely heavily on the input given by
volunteers.
The focus of our work is centred upon the desire to assist
those who have found themselves experiencing either directly
or indirectly, a hazardous relationship with alcohol.
The main thrust of our work is the delivery of the ‘You
Decide’ course: an eight week course written by one of the
founders of BTG. Currently, ‘You Decide’ is delivered within
four southwest prisons: Guys Marsh, Shaftesbury; Dorchester
Prison; Channings Wood, Newton Abbot and Exeter Prison.
This course is in constant demand: our work is being
recognised as helpful to those who are serving a custodial
sentence, and who wish to commence life again.
BTG provides placements to students from Exeter University
(from the School of Psychology), and students of Applied
Drama. In addition, medical students from Peninsula Medical
School also experience community healthcare placements with
us. The purpose of this is threefold: to raise awareness, to
challenge perceptions and prejudices, and to increase
knowledge of possible employment opportunities.
As an organisation we are supported by Taunton Deane District
Council: this support enables us to carry out preventative
work within schools and the community.
If you are interested in a voluntary position with a charity
dedicated to helping people, then please contact us via e-mail
for an application form at the address below.
Or, if you are experiencing problems with alcohol yourself,
please feel free to contact us for advice/help.
Or, if you have just been released from prison and are wishing
to receive support, we are here to help you.

Please note that all applicants would be
advised that for security purposes a CRB would be required
if/when deemed suitable to work with this charity. All
applicants should take into consideration the distance
involved in commuting to assigned place of voluntary work.
However, Beyond the Gate would make every effort to ensure
travel expenses were covered.
